Utah vs Idaho State: Staff Picks

Taking our swings at the first game of the season against Idaho State

James Cella
The game against ISU will be Utah's only "definite win" matchup for the season. With a very tough road to haul after week 1 this game will serve as the warm-up they need to work out the kinks of a new, higher-tempo offense, give new personnel much-needed game experience in a low risk environment, and tune up for the long and difficult season many view as the toughest in the nation. Look for a Weber State-eque score in the game with the two's and three's getting lots of opportunities in the second half. Priority 1: get the win. Priority 1A: no injuries. Utah wins this one handily.

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here. Utah Football is back. You could argue that no other stadium in the country saw more dramatics, more late-game heroics, and more tight finishes than Rice-Eccles did last year. Every game (outside of the Weber State shellacking) came down to the final drive, if not the final play. But have no fear, the opening matchup for the Utes this year will be more like Weber State from 2013, not Oregon State. Utah brings back a motivated, talented group that is ready to prove doubters wrong. Ute fans should hope to see benches cleared, with the starters coming out of the tunnel after halftime in t-shirts, and four QBs getting live snaps. Utah wins and wins big. Anything less than 50 points and I think Ute fans may get a little uneasy.

Upsets by an FCS team happen occasionally, we saw it last year by Eastern Washington against Oregon State, but Idaho State is not the type of team that pulls off those upsets. Utah's 3rd-string could beat Idaho State straight up. Utah will roll and the 2nd and 3rd string players will get a lot of work in the second half.
Utah 62 Idaho State 3

Utah wins because they are playing Idaho State. There isn't a huge difference between Utah's scout team and ISU.
Utah 62 Idaho State 7

The Utes set the tone from the opening kickoff and don't let off the gas until after intermission. Four quarterbacks end up getting playing time as the Utes roll the Bengals.

Utah is going to debut an up-tempo offense with plenty of new weapons while trying to keep the defense as healthy as possible. Wilson and Thompson will both account for 3 scores each while Poole and Booker rush for 75+ yards apiece on limited carries. The defense will force 4 turnovers and the Utes will take a shutout into the 4th quarter before the Bengals punch one in late against youngsters and walk-ons. On to Fresno State.
