Utah vs USC: Staff Selections

It's a big one in Salt Lake City as the Utes take on the Trojans

I've picked against Utah for two weeks straight and they've won both games, not in convincing fashion but pulled out tough wins on the road. USC is a different type of challenge and comes into Rice Eccles Stadium with a lot of confidence and a ton of talent, certainly the most talented team Utah has faced so far this season. That being said, Utah's defense is for real and they have proven that they can pressure the quarterback with a four-man rush while mixing in blitz packages designed to keep opposing quarterbacks guessing and uncomfortable all game long. The formula for Utah to win, in my humble opinion, requires them to have at least 200 yards of passing mixed with 225 to 250 yards rushing while limiting turnovers. Based upon the last few weeks, all the changes at quarterback, and all the drops from the receiving corps I'm not convinced Utah can keep up with USC.

I have no idea who will win this game, so I'll go with the home team. Plus, Utah has a little momentum on their side.

Coin flip this week goes to ... USC. While Utes have exceeded expectations at this point of the season, the lack of consistent quarterback play and a maddening craze of drops by wide receivers has Utah a bit one dimensional. Utes can ride Booker, but for how long? Shocked at how Oregon State really never stacked the box against Utah. If Utes passing game remains nonexistent next week, that won't be a mistake the Trojans make. Should be a fun atmosphere at Rice-Eccles though.

USC is loaded with talent and playmakers all over the field... more than Utah has seen from one team all season. Cody Kessler has found his groove and is coming off a career day against Colorado. Nelson Agholor reminds me of Brandin Cooks in 2013. Leonard Williams will be a top 3 pick in the NFL Draft and Buck Allen leads the confernece in rushing yards. However, I don't think any of that will matter when the final horn sounds at a Rice Eccles on Saturday night. The Utes are playing with a swagger and confidence I haven't seen from a Utah team in a long time and also have the luxury of having the biggest game-changer on their side, Kaelin Clay. USC is poor in punt and kick coverage and I'm putting my money on Clay making a huge return that swings momentum for the Utes, a play that is ultimately the difference in a Utah win. Game ball to Kaelin Clay and Coach Sitake.

I'm too sick to write a synopsis on the game, so my nurse is sending over a score prediction while I slumber in my incubation chamber./

I've been on the USC train all season, and to this point I just look stupid. If they lose this game, I will jump off the train and swim in a pool of red kool-aid. USC has a lot of talent all over the field. Depth is not their friend right now, but with Buck Allen, Kessler, and a bunch of perimeter playmakers, I think SC gives the Utah defense a tougher test than they've faced all year. On defense, Leonard Williams, Hayes Pullard, Su'a Cravens, and Co... loads of talent. USC has looked ugly more often than not, but I think they come into RES riding high and take care of business. Prepare the pool of red kool-aid...

Who the hell knows what to predict anymore? USC has more athletes and the better O. Utah probably has the better D, the better special teams, and the home field advantage. I'd flip a coin, but Ute fans are demanding that I continue to pick against the Utes, so.....
