Breaking down what Utah is getting out of Southern California safety prospect Philip Afia

He's big. He's fast. He's a ballhawk. A headhunter. He's a menace on the football field...and he'll fit in perfectly with the Utah defense.

Utah is getting a true free safety with their newest commitment in Philip Afia . Watching film on Afia, it's clear that he has the instincts and playmaking ability to be the next in a long line of elite Utah safeties. Afia has a knack for finding the ball, whether that's in the air or on the ground. A sure-thing tackler, he's consistently squaring his body while wrapping up with two arms. Afia flies to the ball and shows those previously mentioned instincts in tracking down ball carries with good angles while easily shedding would-be-blockers. In pass coverage, he's very rangy, able to go sideline to sideline with ease. Afia is a terror over the middle, consistently laying the wood on receivers a la current Utah safety Brian Blechen. He's consistently in the right position to make a play on either the receiver or the ball and will pick off a lot of passes in Salt Lake City.
