Staff Selections: Utah at Colorado

The USR staff make their picks for the Rocky Mountain Showdown

Utah is pretty beat up after two very physical games against Stanford and an embarrassing home finale loss to Arizona. You have to be concerned about the psyche of this team after a horrific offensive performance which featured a "3 and Out" fest, game changing turnovers and a defense that unraveled without Gionni Paul and Hunter Dimick. As bad as things were last week, the Buffs are 0-8 in Pac-12 play have to be glad another nightmare of a season is coming to a merciful end. Utah should win this game, but you know how things go with a rivalry game. #sarcasm We've waited for the Utes to have a definitive and dominating Pac-12 win all season and this will be their chance. Booker has a huge game, Wilson gets it together, Clay scores a TD on a special teams, and the defense finishes out strong. Utah ends the season at 8-4, blowing away all expert expectations coming into the 2014 campaign.

Utah is the better team here. They have better players and coaches and that points to a Utah win. Devontae Booker should have a field day against a poor Colorado defense, and the Ute defense will make up for last weeks disaster with 5+ sacks. Game ball to Booker with 200+ yards and 3 TD's.

Tough rivalry game ahead for the Utes (cough). In all seriousness, these games vs. Colorado have been way too close for comfort, with the Buffaloes beating the Utes in Rice-Eccles back in 2011 and Utah having to hang on for wins in '12-13. Without a doubt, Utah's defense will rebound from its lackluster performance against Arizona last week. But will the offense? What in the world is going on with the O? Will Kyle make a QB change? Booker has a solid game regardless of who starts at QB. Add in a special teams TD from Kaelin Clay and the Utes win in Boulder, reaching 8 regular season wins for the first time since 2010.

The 2-9 Buffaloes are giving up 43 PPG in Pac12 play, but Utah can't seem to figure out how to navigate their way into the end zone, regardless of who they are playing. The biggest question mark to me this week will be Utah's give-a-damn. The Utes needs to rally and collectively come out with a chip on their shoulder. If not now, then when? Utah's tackle football team was embarrassed in every sense of the word last weekend and they desperately need to rebound this week to salvage a season, that to this point, has been above and beyond what most people expected. On Saturday it will have been 70 days since September 20 which was the last time Utah left no doubt. For the last 8 games since then it has been down to the wire in their wins and over early in two blowout losses. Utah needs to come out and make a statement to a vastly inferior Colorado team and head into bowl prep on a high note. This game should never be in doubt- the Utes need to keep their foot on the gas and leave blood, sweat, tears and swagg all over the field as they march on to victory.

As I inch towards my demise, the Utes have faltered down the stretch. Will they rebound this week or will it end with a thud? We'll both live for another day, barely.

The Utes are coming off an embarrassing loss and will come out pissed off and focused. Colorado is a team heading in the right direction, but the wins are still few and far between. The Buffaloes have to be feeling pretty deflated and are probably ready for the offseason. That doesn't bode well for the team in Boulder. Look for Booker to make a run at the Pac-12 rushing title and finish the game with 200+ yards and a few TDs. Westlee Tonga will also prove to be a tough match up for Colorado. Bottom line is Utah is the better team with something to play for, they cannot afford to lose this game, it would really sour a solid season.

Utah has the better offense, defense, and special teams, but I'm bad luck for the Utes. When I pick them to win, they lose. Trying some reverse mojo this week and I'll say that Nelson Spruce makes 20 grabs for 250 yards and the Buffs pull the shocker.
