Staff Predictions: Utah vs Colorado State

The Ute Sports Report team makes their picks for the Las Vegas Bowl

Andrew Gorringe- Champion Game Picker
Like Doug, I don’t see this one being all that close. The defense should be pretty fired up after a lackluster performance against CU, and they’re also healthier than they were the past 2-3 games. I expect Orchard and Dimick to terrorize CSU’s offense. As for the Ute offense, Booker and the OL should have a big day as they’re just simply stronger than the CSU front 7. The biggest key for Utah will be containing Biletnikoff finalist, WR Rashad Higgins. Whether it’s Rowe or Hatfield with that responsibility, I feel comfortable saying they’ll be up to the task.

Colorado State has not fared well when Dee Hart has been bottled up (see Boise State and Utah State) and they have not seen a front seven as physical and dominant as Utah- not a great combo if you're a Rams fan. Travis Wilson showed ability to throw the ball against Colorado, but also left scores of yards on the field by missing wide open guys. If Utah can shut down the run game against CSU and Travis Wilson can clean up throws to open receivers, Utah could make this game out of reach quickly. It's been far too long (1,085 days to be exact) since Utah has been in a bowl game, and Royal Purple Las Vegas or not, the Utes need to take out that frustration and head into the 2015-16 season on a high note.

CSU lost a big time coach and that should have a negative impact on the Rams. I can't imagine Utah's offense struggling in this one. Booker, Tonga, and more Booker. The CSU offensive line could be in for a long day in Vegas. The Mountain West doesn't have a Nate Orchard coming off the edge. Only downside for Utah fans is Tom Hackett may not get a chance to smash some punts. I don't see this game being close.

Offense vs Defense. Interim coach vs 10 year coach. Marijuana vs Mormons. It'll look like a Christmas miracle on the field with red taking on green. The last time Utah played in Vegas they were destroyed by Boise State. That's not happening this year. It'll be closer than Ute fans would like, but the team that has closed out games all year will do it again for win number 9.
