It was a complete and utter annihilation of UCLA on Sunday. Utah dominated every single facet of the game in playing efficiently on offense and tough on defense. UCLA couldn't do anything or make anything against a disciplined Utes' squad that had the better game plan and more talent. From start to finish, Utah controlled things at the Huntsman Center as the Bruins were playing for nothing more than pride after the 15 minute mark of the first half
What We Liked
-Delon Wright, again. 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and a block. Enough said.
-Chapman blossoming. His stats weren't overly impressive, but there was a stretch early in the second half where Brekkott Chapman took over for a few minutes on both ends. The kid is going to be a star.
-The Defense. UCLA helped with some poor shot selection, but Utah really shut them down, holding the Bruins to only 39 points. Larry was probably more proud of that than anything else.
-Rebounding. Utah out-rebounded the Bruins by 14 and kept a very good offensive rebounding team to a draw at 10 apiece.
-The start. 6-0 out of the gate really set the tone for the game.
-Balance. 11 guys scored. 8 scored 5 or more points. Utah isn't going to be worn down late in the season this year.
What We Didn't Like
-Utah's initial response to UCLA's zone defense. Once the Bruins went zone in the first half, Utah couldn't figure it out and the Bruins crept back into the game for a bit. Expect to see more teams throw the zone at the Utes, maybe intermittently, to keep them off-balance.
-Occasional Shot Selection. We're nitpicking here, but it was hard to find much to be bothered about. The Utes took a lot of threes early in the game and that, along with the zone issue, kept UCLA around for a bit.
The Utes get a 'rivalry' game at home against Colorado. If Josh Scott, who is arguably their best player returns from injury, and he's day to day right now, we could have a ballgame. If not, Utah should be able cruise to a 3-0 start in conference play.
