Commit Analysis: Johnny Capra

What is Utah getting in OL Johnny Capra after flipping him from Cal?

Jim Harding and Utah went into Northern California to flip offensive lineman Johnny Capra from Cal. At 6'6", 288 pounds, Capra is the 96 ranked offensive tackle in the rankings. Capra reported offers from Pac 12 schools Utah, Cal, Washington State, and Colorado.

Smart kid with a 3.8 GPA. Offensive linemen without much between the ears and aren't ridiculous specimens struggle. He'll pickup the playbook quickly and know his assignments. Is a run blocking machine, playing in a heavy run offense. Lower body is pretty thick and that helps him drive-block many of his defenders in the run game. Tough as nails. A guy that wants to crush his competition on every single play, and generally does so.

On film, commits a clear penalty on almost every single play. Way too many times he's holding, and almost every pass play ends in a takedown-hold, when all he needs to do is push his significantly smaller defender away instead of engaging him with his whole body. Once Capra has engaged a defender, he'll try to pancake him, but rarely gets to a second defender, choosing instead to push the guy into the ground more. Upper body is a bit thin right now. Will need to add more bulk up top. Pass blocking is suspect, but that may be due to a lack of reps. Bend is a bit below average for a Pac 12 prospect and can get sloppy with his footwork at times.

Final Thoughts
Capra plays very similar to former Ute Marc Pouvave. Fortunately for the Utes, Capra will have more time to develop as Pouvave was a JC guy that never really panned out. Has the build to eventually play tackle, but his technique, current skill-set, and strengths make him look like an early candidate inside. Isn't going to play right away as they bulk him up a bit and work on the pass blocking, but could push into the two deep and make some contributions by a his redshirt sophomore year and maybe turn into a starter as an upperclassman. Isn't going to be an all american, but isn't going to be a bust that never sees the field.
