Another win at the Huntsman Center for the Utes as they improved to 15-0 in Salt Lake City. Jakob Poeltl had a big game while Delon Wright did his thing including a steal and dunk during a big Utes run to seize control of the game and run away from Cal for a 76-61 win.
What We Liked
-Poeltl-Monster. Jakob had arguably his best game of the season against Cal.
-Reyes Gets Boards. Chris Reyes had his first double-digit rebound game since the win at UNLV.
-The Blitz. Utah isn't beating teams by methodically wearing them down or winning certain segments of the game. They're doing it with big runs that turn close games into easy victories. The 20-2 run spanning the end of the first half and midway in the 2 half turned a deficit into comfortable lead that they'd never relinquish.
-Delon Throws. Wright has made 78 of 83 free throws in Pac 12 play. That's 93.9%. 8 for 8 last night gives him seven perfect free throw shooting nights in conference play.
-Taylor From Deep. The hot streak ended against Stanford, but Taylor had it rolling again against Cal, going 4 for 5 from 3.
-Tucker Doesn't Slow Down.If they had a 6th man award in the Pac 12, Dakari Tucker would be a strong candidate. 12 points doesn't tell the whole story. He was in attack mode, getting to the basket often.
What We Didn't Like
-Stay Healthy Delon Wright. His departure with an ankle injury had Ute fans on edge, knowing that he's the key to a big tournament. Fortunately, it will like he'll be ok and not miss time.
- Wallace's Big Night. Tyron Wallace was cooking in the first half, helping Cal jump out to a big lead. Utah has had trouble at times this year in slowing down elite players. They'll see a lot of those in March.
The Utes hit the unfriendly road to take on lesser Oregon and Oregon. The Beavs have been a bit of a surprise this year, and are undefeated (6-0) at home in conference play, including wins over Arizona and UCLA. Then comes a tough Oregon team that is fighting for a tournament bid and is 6-1 at home in the Pac 12 with the only loss to Arizona. A sweep could vault the Utes closer towards a 2 seed in the tournament.
