Projecting the Newcomers: Philip Afia

Where does incoming freshman safety Philip Afia project for 2015? We break it down

Philip Afia
Ayala, CA (Ruben HS)
3 star Safety
6-2, 190

The Recruitment
Utah grabbed a commitment from Afia back in late October, beating out the likes of Wazzu, Oregon State, Boise State, and Utah State. Afia took officials to Utah, Oregon State, and Wazzu.

The Skinny
Very good athlete, and a great build for his size. Has a frame where he could actually grow into a linebacker, but with solid ball skills and range, Afia projects best at the safety spot, likely at strong. A heady player that generally takes good angles and loves to hit, Afia looks like a faster, more athletic version of Brian Blechen.

2015 Projected Role
In pretty much every other season, Afia would have been able to come in and make an immediate impact, competing for playing time. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for Utah, they've got a lot of depth at safety and the top four spots are pretty much locked up (barring injury). This is what happens when a team inches closer and closer to having complete Pac 12 depth. Afia is a really nice prospect, and someone that should be able to make an impact with the Utes starting in 2016, but unless there are injuries, the depth ahead of him makes anything other than a redshirt unlikely.
