Projecting the Newcomers: Darrin Paulo

Where does incoming freshman OL Darring Paulo project for 2015? We break it down

Darrin Paulo
Sacramento, CA (Grant Union High School)
3 star Offensive Tackle
6-6, 320

The Recruitment
One of the biggest recruiting battles for the Utes in 2015 ended with them winning out for Paulo's services over Nebraska, Washington State, Oregon, Michigan, Arizona State, and a hoard of other top-notch programs. Paulo really surprised people with his Utah selection as the prevailing thought had Nebraska in the driver's seat. In the end, the Utes grabbed what should be viewed as one of the crown jewels of their class.

The Skinny
Big. Strong. Tons of potential. You can't teach Paulo's size and athleticism, but it's going to take some time for the kid to find the field as he works on his technique and nastiness. A solid pass blocker right now, Paulo has some issues in the run game, staying engaged with his defender and finishing off his blocks. A year or two learning under Jim Harding, combined with some weight room work and Utah has the makings of an eventual all conference tackle.

2015 Projected Role
Despite Paulo possibly having the highest ceiling of any signee in Utah's 2015 class, he's also one of the most raw players, far from being ready to contribute at a Pac 12 level yet. With other true freshman on the roster more polished, and Utah's offensive line depth better than it has been at any point since joining the Pac 12, anything other than a redshirt would be a big shock.
