Projecting the Newcomers: Cody Barton

Where does incoming freshman LB Cody Barton project for 2015? We break it down

Cody Barton
Salt Lake City, UT (Brighton High School)
3 star OLB
6-2.5, 210

The Recruitment
Barton picked up an offer from the Utes last June after their elite camp and committed on the spot. He shut down his recruitment at that point and no other schools came with offers at any point. Washington State did show interest initially and pushed for an unofficial visit, but Barton comes from a long line of Utes and as soon as that offer was extended, he was ready to join his brother on the hill.

The Skinny
Barton played safety in high school, but will make the transition to outside linebacker, and could even eventually end up as a defensive end should he be able to pack on the weight and continue to grow. Athletically, he's somewhat limited, but the kid is going to make up for it by outworking pretty much anyone and everyone he comes across. Barton is the kind of tough, hard working guy that Kyle Whittingham loves to have on his defense and should fit in nicely with his blue-collar attitude.

2015 Projected Role
While he'll need some time to get bigger to play meaningful snaps on defense, Barton is pretty much how you draw them up for the kick coverage team and I'll be surprised if the coaches don't throw him out there to see what he can do to make some plays after Tom Hackett and Andy Phillips boom their kicks. Some garbage time reps early in the season to help with his development wouldn't be a shock either. In other words, he's not the most talented newcomer, but the local kid has a certain skillset that should get him on the field earlier than most of the other freshman.
