Fotheringham's commitment came a couple months after his teammate's commitment to Utah (Tucker Scott), and he said it just felt like the right time to do it. "I decided to make my commitment now because I had a good feeling about it. I knew Utah was where I needed to be. It's good to make that commitment because now I don't have to worry about anybody else committing before me, or anything like that."
Over the years, co-offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach Aaron Roderick has been the lead recruiter for all recruits coming from San Clemente High School, and he did a good job establishing a relationship with Fotheringham early on in the process, which played a big factor in his decision to commit. "I really like Coach Roderick. He was really the first one that saw potential in me and gave me the chance to play at the next level. Watching him as a coach was good too. He is very efficient and I like his style a lot." Fotheringham also got a good feel for the rest of the coaching staff during his unofficial visit in the Spring, which gave him a good feel for what it would be like to live in Salt Lake City. "I really like all the coaches and the way they utilize the tight end spot. The facilities and them being in the PAC 12 made them appealing, and just being around campus gave me a good feeling about Utah."
As mentioned earlier, Fotheringham joins offensive lineman Tucker Scott as a Utah commit from San Clemente High School, and also joins a long list of players that either committed to Utah, or gave serious consideration to doing so (Travis Wilson, Sam Darnold, Sean Harlow), but that ultimately didn't play a big factor in his decision. "The relationship between Utah and San Clemente didn't play a huge factor. They recruit us very well and it's cool to add to that connection, but to me, it wasn't really that big. This was a choice I made for myself, not because of the connection."
Before joining the Utes, Fotheringham will serve a two year LDS mission straight out of high school, which will mean he'll likely join the Utes in the summer of 2018. He also hasn't decided whether or not he will take any official visits to schools other than Utah, but says he is "100% committed to Utah."
Fotheringham had 50 receptions for 585 yards and 8 TD's as a junior. Check out his junior highlights here.
