Projecting the Newcomers: Johnny Capra

Where does incoming freshman OL Johnny Capra project for 2015? We break it down

Johnny Capra<
Auburn, CA (Placer HS)
3 star OL
6-6, 288 lbs

The Recruitment
Capra had offers from many schools out west before settling on Cal last June. His commitment seemed solid before Utah came calling, and calling heavily, with Jim Harding putting in a ton of time and personal effort to bring in Capra. It worked as the Utes flipped him late in the process and he signed in February.

The Skinny
Capra plays mean, and I don't mean that, 'he's got a nasty streak' crap. This dude wants to rip your head off. He was a good run blocker at the high school level because he just outmuscled kids that were smaller, but his technique in both the run game and passing game leave a lot to be desired. Pass protection is a sour spot as he's pretty sloppy, but the overall frame of the kid and his need to work hard should let the Utah coaches eventually mold him into a serviceable player.

Projected 2015 Role
Capra's body is getting close to being ready, but the work he needs on his technique is going to keep him off of the field in 2015. His value is going to come on the scout team as he plays with that meanest of mean streaks, pisses off the defensive line, and makes them better.
