Utah vs Michigan: Staff Predictions

Utah and Michigan staff picks for the season opener

Andrew Gorringe

Harbaugh is no doubt a great coach, but he inherited a bad team, and it takes time to re-develop a roster that was just not good a year ago. This game will be ugly in the first half. Both teams have very good defenses, but Utah's is just slightly better. Combine that with a steady dose of Devontae Booker, and Michigan not being used to the altitude, and all signs point to them being worn out by the end of the game. Utes win after a back-breaking Devontae Booker TD with 5 minutes to go in the game.

The Swag is back for the Utes, their confidence is through the roof right now and with the National attention this opponent brings the Utes make a statement. Utah defense will be front and center; look for the defense to shut down the passing game, and neutralize the rush against the Wolverines. The Utes are stronger on both sides of the trenches, and on the shoulders of Devontae Booker, Utah will wear down the defense. This, along with an obvious and huge home field advantage,  the “Cupcake” Utes win.

In the end, Utah's defense, superior special teams play, and a hostile environment will be too much for the Wolverines to handle. The front 7 for the Utes will make life miserable for Rudock or Morris and set up favorable field position for the Utah offense. I expect a heavy dose of Booker to eventually break the Michigan defense down while Wilson plays smart and protects the ball. Late game desperation by Michigan will lead to turnovers that will seal the game for the Utes.

It's finally here. In just a few short days the months of speculation will come to an end as the maize, blue, and khaki of the Michigan Wolverines make their way into Rice-Eccles Stadium to take on the Utes. Expect a helmet smashing, pad cracking, backyard brawl where whichever offense can make the extra play will come away with the win. Expect a heavy dose of Devontae Booker who will be the difference for the Utes.

Season openers are always tricky, and the Utes have played down to the level of their opponents at times in game 1. The Harbaugh factor and the big unknown makes this one tricky, but the line play on both sides for Utah, Devontae Booker, and a Travis Wilson that looks to be gaining confidence are no match for a Wolverines team that doesn't have enough speed to keep up.
