Utah will face #14 Fresno State in Denver

Utah to play Fresno State in first round of NCAA Tournament

Utah (26-8) is the No. 3 seed in the 2016 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Midwest Region and will face No. 14 seed Fresno State (25-9) on Thursday, March 17 in Denver, Colo. Tip-off is slated for 5:27 p.m. MDT at the Pepsi Center. The game will be televised live on TruTV.

The winner of the Utah-Fresno State game will play the winner of No. 6 seed Seton Hall and No. 11 seed Gonzaga on Saturday in Denver.

Atlantic Coast Conference runner-up Virginia (26-7) is the top seed in the Midwest Region. The remaining teams in the Midwest include No. 2 seed Michigan State, No. 4 Iowa State, No. 5 Purdue, No. 7 Dayton, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 9 Butler, No. 10 Syracuse, No. 12 Little Rock, No. 13 Iona, No. 15 Middle Tennessee and No. 16 Hampton. 

Sunday’s at-large bid gives Utah its second straight and 29th appearance overall in the NCAA Tournament. Utah’s No. 3 seed is the program’s highest seeding since earning the No. 2 seed back in 1999. 

This marks the third time that Utah has earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament since seeding was first introduced in the tournament back in 1979. Utah is 6-2 all-time as the No. 3 seed, which included Utah’s run to the National Championship Final back in 1998. The Utes went 1-1 in its first-ever No. 3 seeding back in 1981.

Utah is 37-30 all-time in NCAA Tournament contests.
