The Utes have had success in the Florida the past few years after Dennis Erickson joined the staff. They hope to continue that upward Sunshine State recruiting trend and would be thrilled to add an athlete like Miami Central's Owen Carney who has seen his recruitment blow up recently.
"My recruitment is going well. I've been getting a lot of offers."
Reporting offers from the likes of Utah, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Cal, Duke, and Kentucky, the defensive end may have more coming.
"Florida State maybe. They're getting close. Same with Alabama."
Carney knows what he wants in a school, and it's a place that is going to make him work hard to help him grow as a player.
"The most important thing is comfortability. That and honest, and a place I'm going to be coached hard. A place they'll really push me."
One of the schools he's really considering is the University of Utah.
"I like Utah. They were ranked really high last year. They're one of my favorites."
While his offer from the Utes is new, he's excited to learn more and develop a relationship with a man that is a Miami area legend.
"Coach Erickson is the one recruiting me. I want to keep growing that relationship and see what happens. He came out and visited our school last week."
He's also intrigued by the prospect of developing into the next Nate Orchard.
"They had a defensive end win a lot of awards recently. I've watched some of his film and think that I can be that kind of player."
As Utah continues to fill their team with Florida players, they tend to have relationships with a lot of prospects, and Carney fits that mold.
"I played with Andre Godfrey and Demari Simpkins when I was at Myamar (Fort Lauderdale, FL) so I know those guys. Demari has been trying to get me to come to Utah."
Not in too much of a rush to make a decision, the 6-4, 236 pounder has a timeline for cutting down his list.
"I'll narrow my list to a top 8 or so during the summer and set my official visits by August 20th.
With plenty of options and more likely coming, Carney only has one school that he knows he'll be visiting officially during the season.
"I want to take all of my official visits before I make my decision. Duke is the only school I know I'm going to visit officially for sure."
A tremendous student with a reported 4.0 GPA and and ACT score of 21, Carney is ahead of schedule with his school work which will allow him to graduate early.
"I'm an early enrollee so I'll be making a decision in late December and then I can enroll before spring ball."
