Since being hired in January as the new wide receivers coach for Utah, Guy Holliday has been busy at work recruiting for his new home. With many connections within the state of Texas, there has been an increased amount of attention to recruits in the Lone Star state. One of those recruits, is a big time WR prospect, Tyquez Hampton from El Dorado HS.
Coach Holliday is recruiting Typuez, and so far, has developed a pretty good relationship with Tyquez already. “I really like Coach Holliday, he’s a real energetic dude, I didn’t expect him to be like that. At first he was kind of mild, and then we started talking and his energetic side came out and it kind of caught me off guard, in a good way, he kept me laughing the whole time i was talking to him.”
The 6’2 200 lb WR has seen an increased amount of attention thanks to his size and athleticism, but it’s the more technical aspects of his game that he recognizes. “My strengths are probably my speed, my ability to get separation, my route running and my ability to make plays. I’m a big guy and have a good catch radius. But I like my route running most. Of course, still looking to build on those strengths”
Utah offered him towards the middle of May, and has since decommitted from SMU. It looks to be a 3 team race, but with West Virginia recently offering that may have changed. “I have 18 offers right now. I’m mainly hearing from SMU, of course they’re still recruiting me, Utah is recruiting me pretty hard, Washington State is and Mississippi State.”
Since the offer, Tyquez is still pretty new to Utah as a football program, but early on the Utes have seemed to make a good impression. “Oh yeah, you know, at first I was like ‘oh it’s just Utah,’ but ever since I started talking to Coach Holliday, and then I kind of looked into it, I was like ‘oh they had a pretty good year last year.’ And then I saw that they had my major, and was like oh ok. And then I started watching that film… I was like “oh yeah, I think I’mma like this.” Right now, I like the program, I just need to take a visit and see how the environment is and see how the practices are before I actually say how I really feel about it.”
Tyquez was planning on taking visits and attending camps during the summer, but recently was approved for summer classes that will allow him to graduate early, but he still plans on a Utah visit in the future. “Oh yeah, definitely plan on visiting Utah. I was going to try to visit during the summer, but i got approved for summer classes to graduate early at the last minute. So I had to cancel all my visits I had planned for the summer”
What Tyquez is looking for in a school are very important to him. “Academics is going to be the main thing, I want to make sure they have my major. SMU was a good program but I found out they didn’t have my major. I’m looking to major in Health Administration. So academics is the biggest thing. Also, the success of the team and how the coaches treat me, I want them to act the same at practice the same way they recruit me. I want them to be straight up with me, and as far as I can tell Coach Holliday is that way.” He is planning on making a commitment this coming Friday, and recently released a top 6 of Washington State, Utah, SMU, UTSA, Mississippi State, and West Virginia.
