It wasn’t too long ago that you’d see a top recruit with his list of final schools and it would look something like this: USC, Oregon, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Utah. One of those schools didn’t fit. Whether it was nationally or locally, there was one outlier. That outlier was Utah. As a Ute fan you’d see that list and think, ‘It’s great to be a finalist, but that kid isn’t coming to Utah.’ 99 times out of 100, you’d be right.
That’s no longer the case.
With top prospects like Maxs Tupai, Garrett Bolles, David Luafatasaga, Leki Fotu, and Davir Hamilton all choosing the Utes in the 2016 class, they're now a destination and a recruiting force that is going to get their fair share of heavily recruited players.
Utah is on the final list for one of the top players in the country, and the top uncommitted quarterback in the country for the 2017 recruiting class in Jack Sears. He’s down to a final four of USC, UCLA, Duke and Utah Sears has ties to Utah as he’s come from the same school that produced former QB Travis Wilson, 2016 signee Cole Fotheringham, and were a finalist for current USC signal caller Sam Darnold, all out of San Clemente High School in Southern California.
Sears has visited Utah twice on his own dime, and the relationship he’s developed with quarterbacks coach Aaron Roderick may be the strongest he has with any coach at any school. The Utes have passed on taking a commitment from another quarterback because Sears is the big target. He’s a program changing quarterback for a school that has struggled to not only land those, but develop them. His ceiling is as high as any quarterback recruit in his entire class across the country.
USC, UCLA, Duke, Utah. The Utes may not get Sears (they do have a good chance though), but they no longer don’t belong in the conversation. Questioning their ability to land a top-flight prospect when going up against the likes of the LA schools or anyone else in the country is foolish at this point. They’re not the outlier in this situation anymore. Utah is now an option….and a good one. They belong.
