Things are starting to heat up for Utah on the recruiting front, as the Utes have landed four new commitments in the last week. UteZone breaks down what’s happened, who the Utes are still targeting and what to watch for next on the recruiting trail. Today’s focus is on the offense.
Current 2017 Roster Projection: Troy Williams (SR), Tyler Huntley (SO), Jason Shelley (FR)
Primary Targets: N/A
What’s Next: As of right now, Utah is finished at quarterback for the class of 2017. Three quarterbacks on the roster for 2017 is a little light, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a late addition of a preferred walkon type over the summer, but in the here and now, Utah is finished recruiting quarterbacks for this class.
Current 2017 Roster Projection: Troy McCormick (SR), Armand Shyne (JR), Zack Moss (SO), Devontae Henry-Cole (SO)
What’s Next: Utah will take a running back in this class, even if there’s a lot of mystery surrounding just who that might be. The Utes are still actively chasing Eno Benjamin, but with Texas offering in the last week, that might be too much to convince him to look elsewhere. Cyrus Habibi-Likio is still in contact with Ute coaches and will announce his commitment on Christmas Eve. He’s looking at Cal, USC, Oregon and Boise State in addition to the Utes. Keep an eye on Oregon commit CJ Verdell. He’s a little uneasy about the state of the Duck program with a new staff and is likely to visit SLC in January.
If Utah misses on all three of the targets listed above, don’t be surprised if they make a push for a JUCO back and sign him late. Personnel head Pablo Cano has strong connections in the JUCO ranks and the Utes have a terrific track record with this type of recruit. There are a few backs they have in mind if they need to go this route.
Current 2017 Roster Projection: Garett Bolles (SR), Leka Uhatafe (SR), Lo Falemaka (SR), Jackson Barton (JR), Johnny Capra (SO), Nick Carman (SO), Darren Paulo (SO), Jake Grant (rFR), Tucker Scott (rFR), Scott Peck (rFR), Michael Richardson (FR), Orlando Umana (FR)
What’s Next: Utah will take four offensive linemen in this class, and they want at least one of them to be a JUCO player. They’re pushing hard for both Valencia and Agasiva and would happily take both if they wanted to commit. Keep an eye on Chaffey OL Ronald Rudd. Word on the street is that his relationship with UCLA might be eroding and he might come back on the market again. Jax Wacaser, Jalen McKenzie and Mo Unutoa should also be on Ute fans’ radars. .
Current 2017 Roster Projection: Siale Fakailoatonga (SR), Harrison Handley (SR), Wallace Gonzalez (JR), Chad Hekking (FR), Bapa Falemaka (FR), Ben Moos (FR)
Primary Targets: N/A
What’s Next: Tight end was never a big need for the class, but the Utes got the guy they wanted. They targeted Moos early and landed him on his official visit. They should be done at the position for this recruiting cycle.
Current 2017 Roster Projection: Kyle Fulks (SR), Kenric Young (SR), Raelon Singleton (JR), Jameson Field (JR), Alec Dana (SO), Caleb Repp (SO), Demari Simpkins (SO), Siaosi Wilson (SO), Tyquez Hampton (FR), Jaylen Dixon (FR)
What’s Next: Utah has two commits already, but they’re actively pushing for two more for this class. A lot of the targets are committed to other programs, so they’ve got their work cut out for them trying to flip people. If Ty Jones, who visited over the weekend decides to flip from Washington, that gives Utah a lot more flexibility in what they do and who they push for. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some new names from the JUCO ranks come up in January as well.
