UTES AND AZTECS, A STATISTICAL COMPARISON

Utah has yet another tough game this weekend when the San Diego State Aztecs come to town.

After last Friday's big win over nationally ranked Oregon, the Utes have to be weary of the let-down factor. Beating San Diego State will not be an easy task.

Rushing - 171.8 yards per game, 3.62 yards per carry, which is 40th in the country.

Passing - 204.8 yards per game, 10.89 yards per competition, which is 63rd in the country.

Total - 376.6 total yards per game, 4.83 yards per play, which is 60th in the country.

Scoring - 28.4 points per game, which is 43rd in the country.

Rushing Defense - 120.2 yards per game allowed, 3.51 yards per carry, which is 34th in the country.

Passing Defense - 243 yards per game allowed, 7.74 yards per completion, which is 84th in the country.

Total Defense - 363.2 yards allowed per game, 5.54 yards per play, which is 64th in the country.

Scoring Defense - 21.2 points per game allowed, which is 45th in the country.

Now for the Aztecs:

Rushing - 131 yards per game, 3.85 yards per carry, which is 81st in the country.

Passing - 202.5 yards per game, 10.47 yards per completion, which is 69th in the country.

Scoring - 24.83 points per game, which is 69th in the country.

Rushing Defense - 128.3 yards per game, 3.33 yards per carry, which is 44th in the country.

Passing Defense - 148.17 per game allowed, 4.81 yards per completion, which is 8th in the country.

Total Defense - 276.5 yards per game, 3.99 yards per play, which is 13th in the country.

Scoring Defense - 17.7 points per game allowed, which is 28th in the country.

Some of the statistics for San Diego State's offense are a bit misleading. First off, they have played against Ohio State's defense, which is arguably the nation's best. Second, starting quarterback Adam Hall has missed some time this season. He was back in action last weekend and it showed. He is the real deal.

Also keep in mind that since the Aztec defense is so good the offense does not always have to try and make a lot of plays, but rather play field position and not make mistakes. Since the Utes are the favored team look for the Aztecs to pull out all of the stops on offense and really try and hit some big plays in the passing game.

San Diego State's defense is one of the nation's best overall, only allowing 11 touchdowns thus far this season. Giving up just 3.99 yards per play is incredible. The Utes will be challenged to move the ball against the Aztecs.

For the Utes to make some noise on defense they need to somehow slow down Hall and his favorite wide receiver Jeff Webb. They connected for three touchdowns last weekend against BYU.

The Utes have been solid against the run all year long and this week they will have to try and stop true freshman tailback Lynell Hamilton. He has a lot of ability and could make some noise if the Utes don't play their assignments and gang tackle.
