Around the Mountain West

The Mountain West league play begins in earnest this weekend and now we'll get a better sense who are contenders and who are pretenders. The non-conference slate was difficult for many and now we find out who can build from that.

Rankings

1. TCU 3-0
The Horned Frogs appear to be the class of the league. There win over Texas Tech was especially impressive as they held the normally explosive Red Raiders to just three points.

2. Utah 2-1
The Utes have done what they should have done. There is no shame in losing at UCLA and blowout wins over Northern Arizona and Utah State are not overly impressive but exactly what they needed to do.

3. Colorado State 2-1
The Colorado win is not as impressive as it would have been a few years ago, but Ram fans will take it. The loss to Nevada is a little disconcerting.

4. Brigham Young 1-2
BYU has played a tough schedule with two heartbreaking losses. Losing on a last second field goal was bad enough, but the way they lost to BYU was even tougher. The one sided win over Tulsa has me feeling that BYU is a team to watch.

5. Air Force 0-1
The Falcons have not won a game, heck they have only played one game, but what a game it was. You can debate the decision to go for two in Tennessee, but they gave the Vols everything they could handle for 60 minutes.

6. Wyoming 1-2
Wyoming has played tough. A one-point loss at Virginia and trading punches with Boise State could both bode well for the Cowboys.

7. UNLV 1-2
The close loss at Aimes, Iowa was impressive. The 29-point loss in Hawaii was not.

8. New Mexico 1-2
A loss to DI-AA Portland State is not good at all. The Lobos did play a good Missouri team tough and they will need to build on that showing.

9.San Diego State 0-2
This Week's Games:
Utah State at BYU
The Cougars have played a very tough schedule and now get a team they should beat. They need an easy one, they will have to play TCU in five days.

Air Force at Wyoming
Air Force is playing only their second game. They had a week off after their heartbreaking loss to Tennessee. Wyoming has played well, but has not found a way to beat tough teams. The winner of this one will have some confidence.

UTEP at New Mexico
UTEP has looked very good this season in a win over SDSU and a three-point loss to Texas Tech. New Mexico has struggled so far this season. It would be a big upset for the Lobos, even if this one is at home.

Utah at San Diego State
The Utes play their second game in California, hoping for better results. Granted the Aztecs are not quite in the same league as UCLA. SDSU's Chuck Long wants his first head coaching win.
