Around the MWC: Week 5

After a week in which three teams got to take it easy, the entire MWC is in action. The marquee game is between TCU and BYU, while Utah also hosts a top-25 opponent.

Power Rankings

1. TCU 3-0
Bye week does nothing to hurt the undefeated Horned Frogs. May get a test from BYU.

2. Utah 3-1
Took care of business against SDSU. Can Eric Weddle do anything more?

3. Air Force 1-1
The Falcons leap frog a few teams. Get their first win on the road in a game that became close late.

4. BYU 2-2
BYU does what it needed to do against in-state opponent Utah State. Anyone shocked that BYU's defense is actually looking impressive? So far the new scheme is working.

5. Colorado State 2-1
I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I don't dock TCU for a bye, but the Rams drop two spaces. That is the difference between being undefeated and losing to Nevada.

6. New Mexico 2-2
The Lobos show why I would never bet on MWC games. They lose to an I-AA team, then beat a bowl team like UTEP. Good win for UNM.

7. UNLV 1-2
Not much to say. Another bye.

8. Wyoming 1-3
The Cowboys lose at home, but at least they came back to make it interesting.

9. San Diego State 0-3
The Aztecs are still trying to get Chuck Long his first win.

This Week's Games:

A high powered offense against a tough defense. BYU struggled against a good Arizona defense, but has been prolific since then. TCU will try to slow down John Beck.

Wyoming at Syracuse
The Orangemen actually have a bit of life, but are nowhere near the team they were in the 90's. Wyoming has fared well against Boise Stare and Virginia and could make things interesting at the Carrier Dome.

New Mexico at Air Force
The Falcons finally get a home game. Both teams are coming off a good win. Could be the most competitive game of the weekend.

San Diego State at San Jose State
The Spartans gave Washington all they could handle and beat Stanford. SDSU played Wisconsin tough but hasn't found a way to win. A winnable game for the Aztecs, but Dick Tomey never makes it easy.

Colorado State at Fresno State
The Bulldogs cannot be happy to have lost to Washington after giving a talented Oregon team all they could handle. Both teams have had two weeks to prepare.

Nevada at UNLV
Which Nevada team shows up? The one that was pasted by ASU or the one that beat Colorado State and Northwestern? UNLV looked bad in their last outing, but has had two weeks to prepare for Nevada.

Boise State at Utah
A potential statement game for the Utes. Utah has won three in a row, but beat teams that have not beaten a D-I team. Boise State has scored over 40 three times, including 42 against Oregon State.
