Mountain West Preview

It is a light week in the MWC. After Thursday's showdown between Air Force and Colorado State, there are just two more games this week.

POWER RANKINGS

1. BYU 4-2

The top of the league is sort of top heavy, but the Cougars get the slight nod for playing tough teams on the road. Close loses at Arizona and Boston College are their only blemish.

2. Air Force 3-2

We are still giving the Falcons a lot of credit for the game against Tennessee. A close loss to Navy is no shame either.

3. Utah 4-2

The only knock against the Utes is that when they lose, they lose big. However, both UCLA and Boise State are solid opponents.

4. TCU 3-2

TCU is learning that coming to the Mountain West does not ensure instant success. They lose back-to-back games against BYU and Utah, but should be in the thick of it by season's end.

5. Colorado State 4-2

The Rams haven't really beaten anyone of substance. Fresno State and Colorado look good on paper, but neither program is as good as they were.

6. Wyoming 2-4

Some close loses for the Cowboys, but they got back to the winning ways with a road win over New Mexico. Hosting Utah provides another challenge.

7. New Mexico 2-4

The win over UTEP looks impressive, but so does hanging with undefeated Missouri. The Lobos have to do a little more than hang around.

8. UNLV 1-4

The Rebels have a win, so for that they get the nod over SDSU. However, that win was against a D-IAA team. Close loses just don't cut it, they need some upsets to get out of the bottom.

9. SDSU 0-5

The Aztecs began the year with two close losses. It has been significantly more one-sided since then. Chuck Long is still waiting for his first win as a head coach.

Saturday's games:

Utah at Wyoming
The Utes are still eyeing a league title, while Wyoming is trying to follow their road win over UNM with an upset.

New Mexico at UNLV
Neither team has been very good, but this could be a springboard game for either team.
