Fall Camp Scrimmage 2 Report

The Utes were back at it for their second scrimmage of fall camp as first and second team players took most of the reps.

Very dull scrimmage today with a lot of emphasis on special teams.

Shaky Smithson looked great returning kicks. He took the first kick back for 50 yards before fumbling. Devonte Christopher and Jereme Brooks took the next two kicks back for forty five yards.

Brian Blechen had another impressive day. He crushed Kendrick Moeia on a crossing pattern and had another huge hit on Tauni Vakapuna in run support. He is turning into the biggest hitter on the team.

The receivers dropped a few balls over the middle, possibly in anticipation of being leveled by Blechen. Terrell Reese had a few drops and Shaky Smithson dropped a ball for the first time ever, but mostly because the pass from Wynn was behind him.

Tauni Vakapuna continues to impress and broke off a forty yard run. Shakerin did not participate today and Vakapuna is going to take a serious run at his number 3 running back spot. He keeps getting better and better.

Justin Taplin-Ross hobbled off the field with what looked to be a minor ankle injury at one point. He should be ok.

Shawn Asiata took a big hit and was down for awhile with a leg injury and missed the rest of the day. Matt Asiata was showing a lot of concern for his little brother.

It didn't show up in the stats, but Greg Bird picked up a Lucky Radley fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

Matt Martinez had the best day of any of the linebackers and was all over the place. He had a great tackle of Vakapuna in the backfield.

DeVonte Christopher ran with the ones for part of the day today in place of Shaky Smithson. He has really cemented himself as the fourth best receiver behind Jereme Brooks, Luke Matthews, and Shaky.

Wykie Freeman got a shot to show what he could do at corner and had a look with the ones, but didn't do enough to cement himself in the two deep yet.

Chris Washington had a nice interception at the end of practice, but has still been a disappointment to me. For his size, he should hit a lot harder than he does.

Players in the pit today included Sam Brenner, J.J. Williams, and Mo Lee as about 10-12 players sat out.

Damian Payne's injury does not look good as he has a huge boot on his leg.

Coach Whitt said that they start putting things for Pitt into practice tomorrow so we'll have a better idea as to who is redshirting and off to the scout team.

This was a pretty even scrimmage with no real standouts. Eddie Wide looked good and so did Tauni Vakapuna. Both sides of the ball were consistent, but not spectacular. Both Wynn and Caine were solid again. The biggest keys right now are getting J.J. WIlliams back healthy and the development of Brian Blechen. If Blechen can nail down his assignments and gain a better understanding of where he needs to be, the secondary should be ok. Shaky Smithson is going to return a punt or kick for a touchdown this year. The final scrimmage is Saturday and the depth chart should be set by then.
