UTEP Picked 4th Best in C-USA West

The 2007 Miner football team was picked to finish in fourth place in C-USA's West Division. The preseason poll was done by Conference USA football coaches and was released this past Tuesday.

UTEP didn't receive much respect in the recent preseason C-USA coaches poll. UTEP lost 27 seniors this past year, which was quite a blow to the team, so it is understandable that the coaches are predicting a 4th place finish for the Miners. Coach Mike Price has 29 new faces on this years team to help soften that blow, but there are still many question marks out there that need to be answered in August, before the season starts.

The Miners were predicted to finish in 2nd place last year in this same poll, but ended up with a disappointing 5th place finish in the West Division, with a 3-5 record in the West and 5-7 overall.

This year, the coaches picked Houston to come in 1st place in the West Division, while Southern Miss was picked 1st in the East Division. Last year, these same two teams met in the C-USA championship game, with Houston winning 34-20. Will this year be a repeat of last year? The coaches seem to think so.

UTEP's safety Quintin Demps was named to the All-Conference Defensive Team. Demps was a first team all-league honoree in 2006 when he tied for fifth in the country in interceptions. Demps was impressive last year with 67 tackles and seven interceptions.
