The MinerReport catches up with Mario Wiggins

Earlier last month, the safety from Madison HS in San Antonio,TX, made his decision about where he wants to play his college ball. We caught up with Wiggins to see how he feels about his recent commitment to UTEP.

On July 9th, Mario Wiggins, a 6-1, 188-pound safety out of Madison HS in San Antonio, gave his commitment to Coach Mike Price to play for the Miners in 2008.

"UTEP is an up and coming school, I want to be a part of that experience and I feel that I can contribute a lot to the team," explained Wiggins. The coaching staff played a big role in his decision, "I really like Coach Price and the rest of the coaching staff." He also wants a chance to play as soon as he gets to UTEP, "I want to get out there and play as quickly as possible," said Wiggins. He also knows that UTEP has a young team and that he has a chance to get out there and contribute right away.

Houston, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt have all shown interest in Wiggins.

"I feel pretty solid about my commitment to UTEP" said Wiggins, "I'm going to look at everything that is out there, but for now I'm solid about my commitment."

In three games in 2006, Wiggins had 36 tackles and 1 fumble recovery, in 2007, Wiggins will be moving to a full time starting role.

Wiggins told us that he has a 3.8 GPA, qualifying should not be a problem.

So when will Wiggins visit UTEP? "We have talked about a visit for one of their home games, but no date is set yet." said Wiggins.

Wiggins said that he is from this area and that he is looking forward to playing at UTEP. Wiggins ended the conversation with: "I'm looking at making state this year." The MinerReport will be following Mario in 2007, and we will keep everyone at the MinerReport updated on Wiggins' progress throughout his senior campaign at Madison.
