Baseball: Commodores face crucial weekend series

A young and improved Vanderbilt baseball team visits #17 ranked South Carolina for an important 3 game series this weekend. The Commodores are 2-4 in the SEC East and are currently in 3rd place behind dvision leader Tennessee and Florida.

Vanderbilt may be just a few hitters away from being a major baseball power. Although the Commodores are sporting a new coach and are the youngest team in the SEC the team is ranked second nationally in fielding percentage (.984) and seventh ERA (2.73). The ERA average is an improvement of almost 3 runs over the 2002 team ERA (5.98).

Sophomore Jeremy Sowers is likely to be the starting pitcher for Friday's game. Sowers has 51 strike outs on the season, which leads the SEC. Unfortunately Sowers has yet to pick up a win (0-3). The Commodores have struggled at the plate at times with a batting average of .242.

Junior Robert Ranson (2-0, 3.05 ERA) will likely pitch Saturday and freshman Ryan Mullins (1-3, 2.78 ERA) will be the probable starter on Sunday.

South Carolina (16-9) was swept by Tennessee last weekend. Vanderbilt has won just 6 of 35 games against South Carolina since the series began in 1992.

Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., Saturday's at 3 p.m. and Sunday's at 12:30 p.m. All times are CENTRAL.
