Football: Greg Johnson update

Here's an update on the status of Vanderbilt's outstanding place kicker/punter Greg Johnson from Parkview High School in Lilburn, Georgia.

Reliable sources at Vanderbilt report that Head Coach Bobby Johnson has granted punter Greg Johnson permission to talk with other schools and explore the possibility of transferring.

The source did not say why Greg Johnson wanted to explore his options but did emphasis that Greg Johnson is still enrolled at Vanderbilt and is attending classes.

As a freshman Greg Johnson had an outstanding season punting 66 times for a 44-yard average per punt. His longest punt spanned 70 yards. Johnson also handled place kicking. He successfully connected on 8 of 13 field goals and 27 of 27 extra point attempts and finished as the team's second leading scorer with 51 points.

If Greg Johnson does transfer, teammate Patrick Johnson would likely replace Greg as place kicker. Patrick did not see action as a freshman. The Athens, Alabama native made 7 of 11 field goals as a high school senior including his longest field goal of 51 yards. Patrick Johnson broke Alabama prep state records for consecutive extra points as sophomore and senior. Top Stories
