Vanderbilt commitment talks new coach
"Actually, I went to Vanderbilt yesterday and talked with Coach Franklin for the first time," said Derek King. "He seems like a sharp guy. I like him."
Vanderbilt lost their last seven games of the 2010 season to finish with a 2-10 record with only one win in the conference. Franklin will have his work cut out for him in the treacherous waters of the SEC, but he has big plans.
"He spoke to me about coming in and changing things," said King. "He not only wants to win at Vanderbilt, but wants to win a National Championship. That hit me hard. That's the ultimate goal for any team, and it's good he's thinking that way. I think he'll get the program turned around."
Although King had many offers from others schools with interest certainly still there, he plans on sticking with Coach Franklin and the Vanderbilt program.
"Yes. I'm still committed," stated King. "My goals coming in are going to be high. I'd like to start, but I want to at least contribute at cornerback or on special teams."
King, 5-10, 185, helped lead the Brentwood Academy Eagles to a 10-3 record and to the third round of the playoffs as a senior. At cornerback he had 40 tackles, an interception, and nine pass breakups.
"I'm going to run track in the spring," said King. "The 100 and 200. The plan is to graduate in May and join the team in June or July."
It's yet to be determined who King's position coach will become at Vanderbilt or his position. Some think he has a big upside at running back where he played a lot of in his junior season at Brentwood Academy. King wore No. 7 for the Eagles. He reports a GPA of 3.5.
