VU Bowlers headed back to NCAA

Vanderbilt's bowling team was selected Wednesday afternoon as one of eight programs that will compete for the 2011 NCAA Bowling Championship next month in the Detroit suburb of Taylor.

The Commodores will be making their sixth consecutive appearance at the national finals, winning the title in 2007 and being semi-finalists in 2008. The past two years they have placed fifth.

"We are excited and I am pleased with the invitation," said Coach John Williamson. "I don't believe in the history of this tournament that any team has dug itself out of such a poor start to the season and still made this field as we just did. Since January we have won 79% of our matches. That is a real accomplishment and I'm proud of our team for bouncing back."

The Commodores were 81-39 over the long season and carried the nation's best strength of schedule. Highlighting their season were team championships at Arkansas States' Mid-Winter Classic and the Holiday Classic, hosted by Alabama A & M.

Joining Vanderbilt in the field are Kutztown, Fairleigh Dickinson, Nebraska, Central Missouri, Sam Houston State, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Arkansas State.

The NCAA Championship will take place April 14-16 at the Skore Lanes in Taylor. Top Stories
