Vandyke making a decision soon

Devin Vandyke, a 6-1, 203 pound DB from South County Secondary School (Lorton, VA) is no stranger to the recruiting process. His older brother, Ronny, went through the same process last year and eventually signed with Virginia Tech. Devin currently holds ten offers and Vanderbilt offered a few months ago.

"I have offers from West Virginia, Maryland, Boston College, Vanderbilt, ECU, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Syracuse," Vandyke said. "I don't have a list of top schools but if I had to say it would be Virginia Tech in my top three right now. I haven't narrowed the rest down."

Vandyke received his offer from the Commodores earlier in the year and he had a chance to visit their campus. One of his former team mates, Andre Simmons, is currently playing at Vanderbilt. Due to this connection, you would think that Vanderbilt had a decent shot at landing Vandyke.

"Vanderbilt offered me at the end of February," he said. "I just let them know that I am now starting to narrow my choices down. I told one of the coaches that I didn't think Vanderbilt fit me. I don't think that I will be attending Vanderbilt because they are not one of my top choices. It took us about eleven hours to visit there and it would be hard for my parents to come out and drive that long of a distance. Vanderbilt is an up and coming school and I know that. The coaches are great and one of my former team mates is there. I love the city of Nashville but I just don't see myself playing there. I didn't see myself fitting into their scheme."

While Vanderbilt didn't seem to be a perfect fit for Vandyke, he did discuss what he is looking for in a school.

"I'm looking for a school with a winning tradition and that in the next four to five years has a chance to compete for a national championship and go to a couple bowl games," he said.

Vandyke currently doesn't have a list of top schools and he has plenty of time to decide before National Signing Day. However, he plans on making his decision in the near future and being a solid commitment to the school that he ultimately decides on.

"I will probably make my decision sometime this summer," said Vandyke. "I plan on seeing Virginia Tech in the next couple of weeks when I drop my brother off. I'm going to see North Carolina State, East Carolina, and Wake Forest in the coming weeks. I'm definitely going to see Kentucky. Once I make my decision, I will not take other visits. It would be fun and everything but that's like cheating on my girlfriend, I don't think that I'll be doing that." Top Stories
