Vanderbilt senior forward Jenni Benningfield is one of 60 top college basketball players invited to USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials May 22-25 in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the US Olympic Training Center. Two 12-player teams will be selected during the trials. One team will compete in the USA World Championship For Young Women, and the second will compete in the Pan American Games. However, since the WCYG team is open only to players born on or after January 1, 1982 and Benningfield was born on October 6, 1981, she is eligible only for the Pan American Games scheduled to take place Aug. 2-9 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
After setting the Vanderbilt record for three-pointers by a freshman in
2000-01 and subsequently playing a second year on the perimeter as a
sophomore, Benningfield switched to the power forward position in
In her new position, Benningfield finished the season as Vanderbilt's
leading rebounder with 7.9 rebounds a game (sixth in the SEC). She also
averaged 16.5 points a game (fifth in the SEC) and shot 55.6 percent
from the field (fourth in the SEC). She led the Commodores in points and
rebounds in 14 games and totaled a team-high 11 double-doubles. She
was named to the Coaches' and Associated Press All-SEC second teams and
also earned Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention Honors.
