In contrast, this past Saturday the football team was in South Carolina, most of the coaching staff was on the road recruiting, and the corner of Jess Neely Drive and 25th Avenue was quiet.
The Hoops Crew took advantage of the break between football Saturdays and the beginning of basketball team practices to host the Annual Fan Picnic for members and potential members of the Hoops Crew, basketball staff and players on the team.
Formerly known as the "Commodore Crew", the Hoops Crew is a fan organization dedicated to the support of women's basketball at Vanderbilt. Hoops Crew contributions are utilized exclusively for the enhancement of the women's basketball program. For example, in the past year, these donations have provided funding for enhancements in the locker room and upgrades of the technology used in recruiting.
One advantage of hosting the picnic on a quiet non-football Saturday is that the players on the team are free to attend since they don't have responsibility for hosting recruits. This year all of the players except Gabby Smith, who had gone home for the weekend, came to the picnic.
One disadvantage of holding the picnic in late September is that it falls in the middle of the September 16 - October 6 fall "contact period", when the NCAA allows coaches to have in-person off-campus contact with prospective student-athletes. Home visits and visits to the prospects' high schools take place during this time, which means that most of the coaches are on the road recruiting.
Fortunately for the Hoops Crew, though, the NCAA allows only three coaches to be out on the road recruiting at a time. With a staff of four, that means one coach has to stay on campus. On Saturday, that coach was Assistant Coach Kim Rosamond, who represented the coaching staff at the picnic. Also attending were Rebecca Silinski, Graduate Assistant for the team, and former long-time manager Chanell Thomas.
Besides hosting the annual picnic, the Hoops Crew is active throughout the year. Members receive a parking pass for women's basketball games, invitations to other events including the women's basketball reunion post-game reception, a tour of the facilities, an invitation to practice and a post-game meeting with Coach Balcomb.
The annual fee for $50 for individuals and $90 for families. For further information, call the Women's Basketball Office at (615) 343-8482 or visit vucommodores.com for a membership application: Hoops Crew Application. Follow @wbbVandyMania
