Adam Butler talks commitment
"When we arrived after our flight they took us on a little tour of the campus," said Adam Butler. "It was good stuff. We saw the player facilities, weight room, the stadium. This was followed by a reception where we got to meet a lot of new people. Coach (Herb) Hand was there. Some of the new recruits, like Brian Kimbrow and Barrett Gouger, I talked to a lot. That was where I met Coach Franklin."
Butler and his parents were at Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday to watch the Commodores take on the Georgia Bulldogs in an old fashion SEC-East clash.
"It was an unbelievable atmosphere," said Butler. "It's a big rivalry game. There were a ton of Georgia fans there. It felt like one big family. All the people around me were committed to Vanderbilt. It felt like a brotherhood. I loved it, and it turned out to be a really close game."
Butler awoke in his hotel room the following day eager to get back to speak with Coach Franklin. He went to the Coach's office with his parents to listen to what he had to say about the program.
"He talked to me a lot about the academics," said Butler, "and how a degree from Vanderbilt would look really good on a resume. He spoke about the team as family and how he likes to keep his guys on the right track. Then he asked me about what I was thinking about my college choice. I told him I was ready to commit today, right now, in front of him.
"He asked if I was sure, and if I was that I wouldn't cheat on him. I wasn't quite sure what he meant, so he said if I committed he really didn't want me talking to other college recruiters. I told him I don't have any reason to do that. This is where I want to be. He then accepted my commitment."
Butler was impressed by many things he saw in Nashville, including the city itself, but a day after the visit he was still talking about Coach Franklin.
"The drive into town was beautiful," Butler said. "We saw mountains and lakes. It was a really great sight. I met a lot of nice people and loved the facilities. Coach Franklin blew us away though. We had an unbelievable conversation. I love what he's trying to do. He has a heck of a passion for getting things started for Vanderbilt. All of us are so excited. I think my parents were more blown away than I was."
Butler plans to return later in the year for an official visit since this was an unofficial visit. He reports good grades in the classroom consistently making the A/B honor roll. He plans on playing basketball when the football season ends to stay active and living in the weight room to get bigger for life in the SEC.
