McDonald updates commitment status
"I'm still committed to Vanderbilt," said Andre McDonald. "I'm not sure right now about taking other official visits or the dates if I do decide to."
After Chris Beatty accepted a coaching position within Tim Beckman's new staff at the University of Illinois, McDonald lost not only his recruiting coach but also his future position coach at Vanderbilt.
"It was a big thing for me," McDonald said of having Beatty at Vanderbilt, "because I hadn't gotten to know the other coaches as well. Coach Franklin came up to watch one of my basketball games. After we sat down at dinner and talked about my concerns."
The new wide receivers coach for the Commodores is Josh Gaddis who was a two-time All-ACC defensive back at Wake Forest before a three year NFL career with the Jaguars and Bears. He was hired last year to coach wide receivers at Western Michigan.
"The new coach they hired is to my liking," McDonald said on Gattis. "We haven't met yet, but he's going to come up here when he's able to. We spoke on the phone. What direction they were going [with wide receivers coach] was really my main concern."
McDonald, who took his official earlier in the season, did not have much of a chance to connect with Vanderbilt's other recruits. That changed at the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Phoenix.
"Cory Batey and I were actually on the same team," said McDonald. "I felt like I did well. I only caught one pass, but I had a block that was pretty that set up a touchdown. I started the game and was chosen as a team captain. It was a fun experience."
McDonald finished his senior season at Hopkins with 60 receptions for 1,251 yards and 17 touchdowns to finish as the number four receiver in receptions and number five receiver in yardage in Minnesota state history.
