Vanderbilt golfers advance at state golf tourney

All three members of the Vanderbilt women's golf team advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round of the Tennessee Women's State Amateur Golf Championship Thursday at the Black Creek Club in Chattanooga. The threesome holds the top three seeds in the tournament.

Sarah Jacobs, the defending champion, notched five birdies against just one bogey in 14 holes to ease past Kristin Lynch. Jacobs was three-under at the turn and added two more birdies on the back to win 6 and 4. The Commodore senior-to-be will face Taylor Bunnell in Friday's quarter-final round.

May Wood was even more impressive, recording six birdies with no bogeys to defeat Holly Cantwell in a quality match, 4 and 2. Like Jacobs, Wood began with a three-under 33 and added birdies at 12th, 14th and 16th holes. Wood will play Beth Irwin Friday.

Joni Gossett used a birdie on the 17th hole to defeat Robin McCarley, 3 and 1 and next plays Shelley Anderson, a former champion. Top Stories
