Baseball Scouting Report: Oregon

The Vanderbilt Commodores (1-3) welcome the Oregon Ducks (4-1) to Hawkins Field for their first home series of the 2012 season. After an impressive 40-24 2010 finish, the Ducks finished 2011 at 33-26 overall and 11-16 for eighth in the Pac-10. The Ducks dropped their first game of the 2012 season 4-1, and then won the Saturday contest 3-2 before taking the two following games by a score of 26-11.

They scored 30 runs over four games at Hawai'i while missing junior Christian Jones and freshmen Sam Johnson and Cole Wiper to Tommy John surgery.

Senior Alex Keudell didn't get much help from the Oregon bats in his Friday night start. In the 2012 debut he struck out three, walked two, and beaned another through four innings. Keudell went 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA, 71 strikeouts and 24 walks in 2011.

Aaron Payne went 4-for-5 in the second matchup against the Rainbows. Payne played in 12 games as a freshman with four starts at second base hitting .188 with four runs.

Sunday Brando Tessar struck out three through six and 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits, and four walks. Kyle Garlick hit a single and a two-run homer for the Ducks who bombarded Hawaii with eight runs in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Aaron Jones started his first game as catcher Sunday and also went 3-for-6 with two RBI's.

Third baseman J.J. Altobelli went 3-for-6 with two RBI's and a double Sunday. In Mondays 12-6 win over Hawai'i Altobelli went 5-for-6 and hit three doubles. Altobelli started 59 games as a sophomore and hit .235 with 20 RBI's. J.J. leads the team with ten hits, four doubles, four RBI's and 14 total bases.

In two starts sophomore Brett Thomas hit .308 with four hits and three runs scored. As a freshman he hit .291 over 43 games with 10 RBI's. In Monday's 17-hit beat down of Hawai'i Thomas had two hits, a run, and a RBI. In 16 games over the summer he hit .254 in the West Coast League.

Relief pitcher Jimme Sherfy was named Pac-12 pitcher of the week for striking 13 out in five and 2/3 innings pitched in relief in Saturday's game against Hawai'i. Jimmie Sherfy was outstanding in relief for Jake Reed. He threw five and 2/3 innings and struck out 13. Over the summer Sherfy played for Corvallis where he posted a 2.16 ERA over 16 and 2/3 innings.

During the series opener Scott Heineman quietly hit .600 in ten at bats with three runs scored. The freshmen went 3-for-4 in the Sunday game with an RBI and two runs scored.

Oregon arrived in Nashville two days early for a Thursday matchup against Belmont. The Ducks will again play four straight games before traveling home to Eugene to face Portland, followed by Long Beach State. Top Stories
