Hahn, sixth after the first day of competition, used the two career performances - a 138'5" javelin throw and 2:22.33 800-meter effort - to claim the highest finish by a Vanderbilt athlete at the NCAA Championships since Ryan Tolbert won the 400-meter hurdles in 1997.
Hahn established a new Vanderbilt heptathlon record with the performance. Her 5,444-point total eclipsed the former mark of 5,399 points set by Julie Walk in 1999. Hahn now holds team records in four events: heptathlon, pentathlon, outdoor high jump and indoor high jump.
Hyleas Fountain of Georgia won the competition with 5,999 points. She was followed by Ellannee Richardson of Washington State (5,839) and Angela Whyte of Idaho (5,745). Hahn held a 44-point margin over fifth place finisher Jordan Willmann of Baylor.
Hahn, a native of Clinton, Tenn., started the competition Saturday with a long jump of 17'10.75". It was the second best effort ever by Hahn, but failed to gain ground on her two closest rivals, Mary Varga of Akron and Fiona Asigbee of Missouri. Hahn passed both competitors after the finest javelin throw of her life. Her toss of 138'5" extended her personal best in the event nearly four feet, and more importantly, contributed 709 points to her total score. Hahn's javelin effort becomes the second longest throw ever by a Commodore, behind only Janis Rose's 140'11" toss in 1993.
Hahn sealed her final position in the 800 meters, cutting more than two seconds off of her previous best, which came three weeks ago at the Southeastern Conference Track and Field Championships. She finished second behind Georgia's Fountain in the SEC heptathlon.
Hahn, the first Vanderbilt athlete to compete at the nationals in three years, becomes the first Commodore to earn points at the NCAAs since 1997 when Tolbert and Amanda Helberg finished first and eighth in the 400-meter hurdles, respectively.
In becoming the first Vanderbilt heptathlete to surpass 5,400 points, Hahn set three personal bests. In addition to her javelin and 800-meter efforts, Hahn twice broke the Commodore outdoor high jump record on Friday, raising the mark to 5'10.75".
