Baseball Scouting Report: Rhode Island

The Vanderbilt Commodores continue the search for their first series win this weekend against a hot Rhode Island club. The Rams have won four straight, taking the College of Charleston Cougar Invitational over the weekend.

The Rams aren't too impressive statistically with a .202 team batting average and .303 on base percentage. Rhode Island has made opponents pay for costly errors. Rhode Island scored five unearned runs in their 9-5 win over College of Charleston Friday. In their 2-0 victory over Connecticut both runs scored were unearned. The Rams managed just three hits against the Huskies and left six stranded.

The Rhode Island bullpen was phenomenal over the weekend giving up just five hits over 10.2 innings. Junior Mike Bradstreet etched his second save of the season against the Huskies. In 5.2 innings pitched the right-hander has yet to allow a hit.

Sophomore lefty Nick Narodowy has also done excellent in 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

Senior left handed pitcher Anthony Pisani leads the starters with a 1.64 ERA. Through 11 innings pitched he has nine strikeouts and has given up just one extra base hit. Pisani won Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week in his win against UConn, throwing for 6.0 innings and striking out five. The southpaw gave up just three singles in his 2-0 start to the season.

Redshirt senior Chris Pickering (1-1, 5.91 ERA) picked up his first victory last Friday against No. 29 College of Charleston. Pickering gave up seven hits and five earned runs, while striking out seven.

Kevin Lee, a right handed pitcher, has started Saturdays and is 1-1 on the year with a 4.35 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched. The sophomore gave up three hits, three runs and failed to strike anyone out in 5.1 innings pitched against Xavier.

No one has been hotter in the batter's box than catcher Milan Adams. The senior went 5-for-13, scored two runs with an RBI in the last three games. He also helped hold opposing batters to a .191 average during the Cougar Invitational.

Shortstop Mike LeBel started the weekend with a 3-5 outing that included a double, a home run, three RBI's and a run scored against College of Charleston, however, he has missed the past two games. The senior leads the team with a .545 average in his four appearances and a whopping .706 on-base percentage. In LeBel's absence freshman Tim Caputo has filled in, batting .167.

Sophomore center fielder and leadoff man Jeff Roy is hitting .143 with six strikeouts, but a .280 on base percentage.

Outfielder Jeff Cammans has been hitting third in the DH spot. The senior leads the Rams with five RBI's batting .190 and has started all six games with four hits, two runs scored and two doubles.

Left fielder Chris Famiglietti is second on the team batting .308. The redshirt junior has appeared in all six games and started four.

First baseman Pat Quinn scored the game-winning run against UConn, but is batting .105 on the year.

The Rams took advantage of costly mistakes by their opponents to help stay in the win column in their last four games. Minimizing mistakes and making them earn base runners will be a key aspect of the weekend matchup. Top Stories
