The Commodores (7-10) open up SEC play this weekend against the No. 1 Florida Gators (16-1). Florida's only loss this year came at the hands of No. 15 Cal State Fullerton and recently won an impressive Tuesday matchup against No. 7 Florida State 9-2. Florida had an exhibition scheduled for Wednesday against the Ontario Blue Jays that was cancelled due to lightning and heavy thunderstorms. The Gators have now won 14 straight games since their 5-8 loss to Cal State Fullerton in their opening series.
Florida has some major hitting power with 27 home runs on the year and a .312 team batting average.
Junior Mike Zunino has been a terror at the plate batting .417 with seven home runs, six doubles and leads the team with 23 RBI's. Zunino hit the game winning three-run homer in the in 12th of regular series finale last season at Vanderbilt to give the Gators a 6-3 win.
Junior Nolan Fontana is hitting second on the team at .356 with four home runs, 11 RBI's and two doubles. The shortstop leads the team in walks at 13 and is a perfect 5-5 in stolen base attempts.
True freshmen Taylor Gushue earned first-team all-state all three years of his high school career has started 16 games for the Gators. The first baseman/catcher/designated hitter has earned SEC Freshman of the Week twice while batting .308 with four home runs, four doubles, a triple and 12 RBI's.
Casey Turgeon is another true freshmen in that has started 16 games this year. Turgeon is hitting .300 with two home runs, three doubles and 9 RBI's. The Gators have been able to overcome some freshmen growing pains as the second baseman is second among the team with three errors.
Josh Tobias leads the team with five errors on the year. Another true freshman, the third baseman has started in 14 games and is hitting .225 with a two doubles, a triple and a home run. Tobias is third among the Gators in stolen base attempts going 3-4.
Senior right fielder Preston Tucker also has some hitting power with six home runs, 16 RBI's, three doubles, and a triple.
Tyler Thompson has manned center field excellently this year with no errors through 17 games. The senior is batting .326 with two home runs and eight RBI's. Thompson also leads the Gators in stolen base attempts, going 4-7 on the year.
In his last meeting against the 'Dores Daniel Pigott was 2-for-4 with two runs in the 6-4 win to clench a birth in the CWS Finals. This year the senior is batting .281 with 13 RBI's and 12 runs scored.
Hudson Randall has been the Friday starter so far throughout the season for the Gators. The right-hander is 2-0 on the year with a 3.65 ERA and 17 strikeouts. The junior ace leads Florida in time on the mound with 24.2 innings pitched while giving up just one walk.
Junior Brian Johnson has gotten his time on the mound on Saturdays. He is not too shabby as a designated hitter with a .308 average, 11 RBI's, three doubles and a home run. The lefty is 2-0 on the year in 19.2 innings pitched with 15 strike outs and a 4.12 ERA in four appearances.
Sophomore Jonathon Crawford will get the Sunday start against the 'Dores. The right-hander is 1-1 on the year with a 5.71 ERA and 19 strikeouts through 17.1 innings pitched
Austin Maddox's 22 strike outs lead the team. The junior also leads the team with six saves in 15.2 innings pitched.
Vandy's best shot of pulling a win against the Gators may be on Sunday. Florida's only loss of the year came on a Sunday and the past few Sundays have been close with a 3-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast, an 8-5 win against Miami (Fla.) and a 5-3 win over William & Mary all coming on Sundays.
