Scouting Report: Georgia

The once mighty Vanderbilt Commodores are hoping to pick up their first conference victory of the 2012 season when they host Georgia for a weekend (Fri. - Sun.)series. Look inside for D.T. Yates' exclusive scouting report.

The Georgia Bulldogs (16-6, 2-1) started their season 10-1 sweeping Presbyterian and Winthrop while dropping their first game to Western Carolina 5-3. The diamond ldogs lost all three games in their home series against UCLA when they were outscored 16-9. On Tuesday the Bulldogs won their first of three games this year against a 15th ranked rival Georgia Tech 7-1.

Last weekend the Dawgs wrapped up the series victory early with a 10-5 win over Tennessee Saturday. Georgia was unable to complete the sweep against the Vols and fell 3-0 Sunday. Left fielder Hunter Cole (.317) went 5-for-9 with a HR, and hit .556 in his SEC debut in Georgia's 2 series win against the Vols. The freshman leads the team with three home runs. Junior Kyle Farmer leads the team in both doubles (12) and RBI's (15) batting .322. The shortstop is coming off a 2011 season where he led the team in both home runs and RBI's.

Curt Powell tops the team batting .377 with 10 RBI's and is 5-for-13 in his last four games. The Bulldogs third baseman is 3-of-4 in stolen base attempts with nine strikeouts on the year.

Sophomore Conor Welton is hitting .260 with 9 RBI's while manning center fielder with a perfect fielding percentage.

Second baseman Levi Hyams is hitting .253 with two home runs and is tied for first on the team with 15 RBIs. The senior hit a team-best .332 last season.

Designated hitter Brett DeLoach is .283 with nine RBI's, a home run and three doubles. The junior has started in 15 of the Bulldogs 21 games so far.

Colby May has made the transition to first baseman excellently so far with a perfect fielding percentage. The senior is hitting .273 with nine RBI's, a home run and two doubles.

Senior Peter Verdin is .270 on the year with 10 RBI's, two doubles and a triple, the right fielder is a perfect 3-3 in stolen base attempts.

Sophomore catcher Brandon Stephens is hitting .180 with four RBI's and a home run.

Friday pitcher

Lefty Alex Wood (3-1, 2.27 ERA) has only given up one HR given up through 31.2 innings pitched. The sophomore has pitched excellently with 36 strikeouts and two walks in six appearances.

Saturday pitcher

Senior Michael Palazzone (0-2, 3.68 ERA) has 17 strikeouts and five walks while holding opposing batters to.273. The right hander has yet to claim his first victory through five appearances and 22 innings pitched. Last year the right hander pitched a complete game in Georgia's 5-4 win against the 'Dores.

Sunday pitcher

Righty Pete Nagel (0-0 2.91 ERA) has 19 strikeouts with seven walks in his debut. The freshman has the third most work on the team with 21.2 innings pitched in seven appearances.

Blake Dieterich (1.04 ERA) leads the team with three saves thus far with 12 strikeouts through 17.1 innings.

This series against Vanderbilt will be the Bulldogs first set of away games of the season. Georgia's lone non-home game was a 3-2 victory on a neutral field against Kennesaw State.
