Jeremiah Gaines talks new offers
"Vanderbilt and Wake Forest offered me the same week," said Jeremiah Gaines. "I was just on the phone with Coach Bankins [of Vanderbilt] last night. He was telling me about their spring game. He said the score was 33-0.
"I like Vanderbilt. It's the SEC, so you know you'd be playing competitive football. The academics are top of the line. They want me to come in and play the H-Back or fullback position, and that's what I'm hoping to play in college."
Gaines put in a big junior season performance at tight end after playing his first two seasons on varsity at inside linebacker. In Red Oak's second game of the year against Lake Dallas he had six receptions for 146 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
"I can line up wide on the outside, at tight end attached to the line, or in the slot," Gaines said. "I'm a good route runner. I use my body and hands well to bring in the catch. I also have deceptive speed. Most people think the tight end's going to be slow, but that's not the case with me."
Gaines finished the 2011 season with 34 catches, 740 receiving yards, and seven touchdowns. He was named Second Team All-District in Texas 15-4A. He had a busy spring taking in Junior Day visits, but is now focused on spring practice before summer break.
"I think I made it to at least eight Junior Days," said Gaines. "Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, SMU, and North Texas. I'm probably leaving one out.
"We start spring practice on Monday. Over the summer I'm hoping to go to both Vanderbilt and Wake Forest and then decide before the season so I can get it out of the way and give my full attention to football.
"We've only made the playoffs once since I've been here. That was my freshman year, so my only goal next year is for us to make it back in.
"Most people usually say playing time when asked about making their college decision. I think if I go in and work hard and show the coaches what I can do playing time will come. I'm looking most at the school's academics, playing in a winning program, and finding the best fit for me."
Gaines father, Fred, played safety at Oklahoma State and roomed with Heisman trophy winner, Barry Sanders, as a sophomore.
Gaines starred for the Red Oak Hawks' track team where he had a 23.2 personal best in the open 200 meter dash. He reports a 3.7 GPA and plans to graduate next June. Follow @VandyManiacom
