Don Yates : What makes Gerald Perry a great player?
Rodney Saulsberry: Number one, the one asset that he has that us as coaches say "you can't coach it. You are just blessed if you get it." is he has world class speed. That's the one thing we have to leave with him is that he is extremely fast and that gives him a heads above anybody because he can really run.
D Y : What were some of his stats from last season?
RS: I know he averaged over 20 years per reception. He had like a 25-yard per catch average so he was a big play threat at all times. He had nearly 900 yards receiving this season so he is a big play guy. He's had some games were he had two or three touchdown catches; he had a game where he had four catches for 200 yards. He's extremely explosive. That's what we look for with Gerald, just being able to blow the top off any coverage and he's a physical receiver as well. He's going to be a receiver at the next level.
D Y : So Vanderbilt plans to use him as a receiver?
RS: Yes, he's been recruited as a receiver. He has that kind of speed... he's really going to be a bonus for them especially competing in the SEC. He has the speed that can match up. He'll have to get bigger when he gets to college but he has the speed right now.
D Y : What's his height and weight?
RS: He's like 5-11, pushing 6-feet, 170-175 pounds but he is extremely fast though, I know I keep saying that but it shows up on film. He has explosive speed; he's like a Mike Wallace type guy on offense.
D Y : Who is faster, him or Mark Dodson?
RS: Ah, I'm going to start an argument. Both of them are extremely fast but I'd say Gerald is faster but it would be a close race because both of them have great speed.
D Y : Can you just fill us in on how Perry ended up committing to Vanderbilt?
RS: We actually go up to Vanderbilt every year for their 7-on-7 camp; we've done it for at least the past five years. The new staff had a chance to see him last year and he had one game where he caught like four touchdowns in one 7-on-7 game and most were like deep passes where he was just flying by people. So they got a chance first-hand to see the speed and how he can change the game. He's been on a couple of visits to Vanderbilt already.
D Y : What schools offered besides Vandy?
RS: Ole Miss (soft verbal offer contingent on camping there), Mississippi State (soft verbal offer contingent on camping there), Cincinnati, Memphis, Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee, Western Kentucky.
D Y : Anything else you think Vanderbilt fans might be interested to know about him?
RS: He's just a great kid!
