Vanderbilt offers and visit on the horizon
"I spoke to Coach Bankins over the phone," said Chris Burton. "He loved the way I catch and block and thought I'd really help the team at tight end. They like me in every offensive set; spreading out wide, H-back, or putting my hand on the ground.
"He really explained to me a lot about the college, the academics, and the football program. They're in the SEC which is the biggest conference going. I'm excited about the offer and plan on making [Vanderbilt] one of my five visits over the summer."
Burton lists East Carolina, Hampton, North Carolina State, Temple, Texas Tech, VMI, and Wake Forest as his other seven offers, but plans on checking on a couple of other interested schools while he's on the road.
"The five I'm going to for sure are Vanderbilt, N.C. State, Wake Forest, South Carolina, and ECU," Burton said. "I'd like to go to some big camps and combines to get tested on my 40 and vertical. I'm going to Duke's summer camp and possible N.C. State's or Wake Forest's. Hopefully I can learn and get better at camps and show off on the field next season.
"When I'm on campus I'd like to talk to a couple of the players to get their take on the program and have a good conversation with the coaches. I'd like to check out a practice to see exactly how the coaches are both on-and-off the field. Mainly, I want to go and find out more about the academics."
Burton did attend a NUC Combine Five-Star Showcase in New Jersey in April and was selected as Tight End MVP. He made First Team All-District at Washington High School for the second straight season as a junior and helped his team, the Eagles, to the third round of Virginia's AAA playoffs.
"I had 14 catches for 315 yards and two touchdowns," stated Burton. "On defense I made three sacks. I felt I improved on yards after the catch and getting into my routes easier. My two major games came against Petersburg, although we lost by one, and Churchland where I made a big third quarter touchdown catch to get us back in the game."
Burton is competing with the track team in a regional meet. His best event is the shot put where his best toss is a 44'6". He reports a best 40 time of 4.75 which he ran at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. Washington has completed it's 2011-2012 school year. Burton says he ended the year with a 3.43 GPA.
