Gales received an offer from Vanderbilt shortly after attending the Commodores' Top Prospects camp in June. In the 2002 season, as a junior, Gales helped Coach Mike Mizer's Spring Hill Raiders to a 3-7 record.
"There's not a better deal (for Gales) than Vanderbilt," Mizer told the Columbia (Tenn.) Daily Herald. "Because regardless of football, he's going to get one of the best educations around."
Gales' teammates Stephen Ackley, a lineman, and Jason Hoath, a quarterback, were recruited by Vanderbilt last year, although both graduated this summer and ended up going elsewhere. Ackley, a 6-3, 250-pound lineman, will attend Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy and may be a major college prospect at some point in the future.
Gales becomes the second rising senior to commit to Coach Bobby Johnson's class of 2004. The first was Jeff Jennings, a running back / linebacker from Dandridge-Jefferson County, Tennessee. Verbal commitments are non-binding.
