VU baseball off to best SEC start since '80

The week started off rough for Vanderbilt baseball as the Commodores dropped one to local rival MTSU and then were downed in Friday's series opener with Florida. However, the 'Dores regrouped to earn a 2-1 series victory and still control their own destiny in the SEC East. Look inside for a Vanderbilt-SEC baseball update. NOTE: Tuesday's game with Lipscomb has been moved to 4 pm. (weather issue).


Wednesday: L, 4-1 at Middle Tennessee
Friday: L, 7-1 vs. Florida
Saturday: W, 6-1 vs. Florida
Sunday: W, 5-4 vs. Florida


Tony Kemp: Kemp had a tough week batting just .133 with 2 hits and 2 walks but Kemp is still sporting a nifty .391 batting average on the season.
Steven Rice: Rice pitched 6.2 solid innings in relief against MTSU and Florida. He finished the week with a 1.35 ERA. His season ERA is now 2.76.
Tyler Beede: Beede, now 6-0, led Vandy to a huge Sunday victory over Florida. He struck out four while allowing only 2 hits and 5 walks in 6.1 innings.
Mike Yastrzemski: Came up with 2 key hits and a walk in Sunday's victory over Florida and scored 3 runs.
Kevin Ziomek: Suffered his first loss of the season against Florida on Saturday. ERA now at a still very respectable 1.59.
Conrad Gregor: Batted .400 for the week with 4 hits and two RBIs. Gregor is batting .284 for the season and has 20 RBIs.
Connor Harrell: Harrell had 5 hits for the week and batted .357 for the four games. Harrell leads the team with 30 RBIs on the season.
Vince Conde: Had a double and 2 singles and 3 RBIs in 14 at bats. Conde is batting .310 for the season.
Xavier Turner: Turner came up with a big hit late in Sunday's Florida game to help the Commodores escape with a win. Turner batted .500 for the week coming up with 3 hits in 6 at bats.
John Norwood: Norwood had 3 hits in 5 at bats for the week for an impressive .600 batting week average. Norwood is batting .316 on the season.
Brian Miller: Picked up a win on Sunday versus Florida after shutting out the Gators for the final two innings. Miller (3-0) has a stellar .44 ERA on the season.

The Commodores' 5-1 start in SEC play is the team's best since starting 5-1 in 1980. That year Vandy went on to win the SEC championship. The Commodores team batting average is .298 (opponents .204) with a 2.28 ERA (opponents 6.37)
