Vandy baseball continues SEC domination

Vanderbilt got the week off to a good start beating local rival Lipscomb 4-1. Then in a wet 3-game series with state rival Tennessee, the No. 3 ranked diamond 'Dores showed resilience as they overcame UT threats in all three games to get the sweet sweep.


Tuesday: W, 4-1 vs. Lipscomb
Friday: W, 4-3 vs. Tennessee
Saturday: W, 8-3 vs. Tennessee
Sunday: W, 12-8 vs. Tennessee


Tony Kemp: Kemp had a solid week with four hits and four walks in 16 bats. His season batting average (.380) is on the rise again.
Kyle Smith: The freshman had a grand slam homer in his first SEC action which propelled the Commodores to a sweep over the Vols. Smith is batting .308 on the season with 9 RBIs and an incredible .769 slugging percentage.
Tyler Beede: Beede, now 7-0, pitched Vandy to an 8-2 Saturday victory over Tennessee. He struck out nine while allowing 4 hits in 7.1 innings.
Mike Yastrzemski: batted an impressive .375 for the which was the best of the Commodores' regular starters. Yaz's six hits included a double and a triple. He's batting .297 on the season.
Kevin Ziomek: Struck out 10 in his seven innings to mark the fourth time in his seven starts this year ERA now at 1.89.
Conrad Gregor: Batted just .175 for the week with two singles a double and a walk. Gregor's BA is now .265.
Connor Harrell: Harrell (.287 RBI) had four hits and a walk during the week. Harrell leads the team with 34 RBIs on the season.
Vince Conde: Conde had four hits including a pair of doubles and four walks during a good week for him. His .306 BA is the team's second best of the regular starters.
Xavier Turner: Turner appears to have found a home at third base. He stole home when the Commodores executed a rare triple steal in Tuesday's win over Lipscomb. Turner was solid at the plate during the week garnering a combined four hits and three walks during the four games. Turner, who also had two doubles during the week, is batting a solid .323 on the season.
John Norwood: Batted .400 for the week with three hits and a walk in five at bats.
Brian Miller: Came up with a save against Lipscomb and earned the win in Sunday's victory over UT. Miller (4-0, 0.33 ERA 8 saves) had a combined 9 strikeouts during these two games.
Jared Miller: Picked up a win in Sunday game against UT after pitching 2 scoreless innings versus the Vols.
Carson Fulmer: Fulmer (4.50 ERA) had two saves during the week including one in Sunday's big win over the Vols.

The Commodores' 8-1 start in league play is the best since 1972 when the team started 10-1 in the SEC. Vanderbilt's team batting average is .293 (opponents .212) with a 2.42 ERA (opponents 6.31)
