Vandy baseball off to best SEC start ever

No. 2 ranked Vanderbilt continued its tear through the SEC schedule. After the Commodores thrashed local rival MTSU 12-3 on Tuesday the Black & Gold toyed with Ole Miss in Oxford before eventually sweeping the Rebels 3 games to none. Look inside for Commodore highlights from the week and an SEC baseball update.


Tuesday: W, 12-3 vs. Middle Tennessee
Friday: W, 3-1 at Ole Miss
Saturday: W, 2-1 at Ole Miss
Sunday: W, 7-6 at Ole Miss


Tony Kemp: Kemp had an impressive 7 hits and 2 walks during the week. Had 3 key hits in Sunday's win over Ole Miss. Batting .378 on the season with 19 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.
Kyle Smith: Batted .333 for the week with a hit in 3 at bats. Also had four walks. Batting .313 on the season.
Tyler Beede: (8-0) continues to thrive at toying with the opposition. He allows opposing runners to get on base but rarely allows them to get to home plate. Beede struck out six in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Rebs despite giving up 4 hits and 5 walks. Beede has the top ERA (1.05) of the Commodore starters.
Mike Yastrzemski: Posted three multi-hit games during the week while leading the team with a .438 average and 7 hits. Had two hits in win over MTSU. Reached base 5 times in Sunday win over the Rebels with 3 hits and 2 walks.
Kevin Ziomek: On Friday night versus Ole Miss allowed one run on three hits over 7.1 innings for his sixth win of the year. Ziomek's (6-1) ERA now at 1.81 with 65 total strike outs.
Connor Harrell: Harrell had 3 hits in the Sunday win over Ole Miss and 6 hits for the week. Harrell has a .292 batting average with a team best 5 home runs, 39 RBIs and .508 slugging percentage.
Conrad Gregor: Batted just .250 for the week for 3 hits in 12 at bats but picked up an impressive 7 walks while providing superb defense. Gregor is batting .264 on the season with 23 RBIs.
Vince Conde: Blasted a grand slam in Tuesday's win over MTSU. Conde batted .313 for the week with 5 hits and 2 walks. Batting .307 on the season with 21 RBIs.
Xavier Turner: Scored four runs in win over MTSU. Had 5 hits, 3 stolen bases and scored 5 runs during the week. Batting .313 on the season.
John Norwood: Batted .286 for the week with a pair of hits in 7 at bats. Batting .323 on the season.
Brian Miller: Miller had a tough week by his standards. He gave up a couple runs in the Sunday win but stayed in and was credited with a win after Vandy rallied and he shut down the Rebs in the final frame. Finished the week with a 3.18 ERA, 2 saves and the Sunday victory. Season ERA is now at a still very impressive 0.81 with 29 strikeouts against 3 earned runs allow and 4 walks.
Carson Fulmer: Worked 3.1 innings of relief and struck out 4 while allowing a pair of hits and now runs.
Steven Rice: Picked up his second win of the year with 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen versus MTSU. Rice (2.29 ERA) now has struck out 16 batters while only allowing 5 walks and 5 earned runs in 19.2 innings pitched.

The Commodores' 11-1 start in league play is the team's best conference start ever. Vanderbilt's team batting average is .296 (opponents .211) with a 2.42 ERA (opponents 6.12)
