Achievements: 2012 Broyles Award finalist. Under Mason's leadership in 2012, his defense broke Stanford's single-season sacks record (57) and led the Pac-12 in scoring defense (17.21), total defense (336.21), rushing defense (97.0), sacks (4.07) and tackles for loss (9.00).
Why hire him? Mason coaches at an elite academic university, similar to Vanderbilt. He's been coaching and recruiting the same type of players (good students) that Vanderbilt traditionally pursues. Stanford has been a powerhouse program the past few years and Mason could help the Commodores get to that next level (top 10 and top 1/3 of the SEC). He also has NFL coaching experience which would help in recruiting elite players.
Why not to hire him? Mason is a West Coast guy. Like Franklin he might bolt to his old stomping grounds after a few years.
VandyMania's take: Would be a solid hire.
