Vandy Wright choice California star

Linebacker Charles Wright of Arnold Beckman High School (Irvine, Calif) signed with Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Look inside for a photo and quotes from Wright.

"It's a big stress reliever," said Wright on signing with the Commodores. "I was ready to go with one school, know where I'll be going, and have that set. Vanderbilt's in the SEC. It's a big time football conference, but the academic side really is what stood out most to me. Plus, I love Coach Mason and the defense he's going to run with Coach (David) Kotulski.

"Previously, I had given my verbal commitment to San Jose State. When Coach (Kenwick) Thompson made the switch [from San Jose State to Vanderbilt] he must have dropped my name to Coach Mason. Last Friday, I was at Vanderbilt and had fun with all the other recruits who were there and really loved the city of Nashville.

A two-year starter at Arnold Beckman, Wright, 6-foot-3, 225-pounds, was a stand-up defensive end, but is being looked at by the Commodore coaching staff at either inside or outside linebacker. As a senior, Wright was named first team All-State, All-League, and All-City. He was coached in high school by Glen Fisher. Top Stories
